This little guy, named Justin, was one of three tiny hoglets found in Għasri next to their mother, who had sadly been killed on the road.

One of the babies had already passed away, said Nature Trust Malta, with a second sibling dying shortly after being taken into rehabilitation.

Justin was the only survivor, and what followed was a lot of care, patience and quite a few sleepless nights, especially for volunteers Betty.

‘Raising such a young wild animal is never easy, and in those early days there were no guarantees. But little by little, Justin grew stronger’, the said.

‘The tiny hoglet who had arrived completely dependent on human care grew, gained strength and gradually became more independent, until eventually, he was ready for the next step. Once given the chance, he was very much ready to go.;

‘From being found helpless beside his mother to disappearing into the vegetation on his own four feet, this little hedgehog has come a very long way.’

‘All of the animals that we rescue are protected species and it is illegal in Malta to harm them or keep them as pets. A massive thank you always goes to the public who call us when they notice an animal in distress, our vets, and our dedicated rescue and rehabilitation volunteers.’
