Jury System Serves Murderers, Daphne Caruana Galizia Foundation Says
Local

The Daphne Caruana Galizia Foundation has called for immediate reform of Malta’s jury system following the outcomes of the Lorin Scicluna trial in the murder of Lassana Cisse, and of Yorgen Fenech’s trial in the Daphne Caruana Galizia assassination.

The Foundation argues that the jury system serves murderers better than it serves victims, referring to both the acquittal of Lorin Scicluna despite his lawyers securing a 30-year plea deal, and to the similar acquittal of Yorgen Fenech after asking for a pardon for the crime.

The foundation says these actions reveal Scicluna and Fenech’s alleged guilt, and that the jury system is no longer fit to serve justice properly.

After 200 years with the same jury system, they call for immediate and drastic reforms to ensure that perpetrators can no longer abuse the weaknesses in the system.

Specifically, they cite the lack of explanations about jurors’ decisions, the prejudices they are vulnerable to, and their lack of legal training as key issues that must be addressed.
