Junior College Directives To End Following Agreement In Principle

Industrial directives affecting Junior College are set to be suspended after an agreement in principle was reached between the Government and the Malta Union of Teachers (MUT).
The Ministry for Education and Sport welcomed the union’s decision to lift the directives following discussions that resulted in a proposed collective agreement for Junior College lecturers. The agreement will now be put to a vote among MUT members before being formally finalised.
Prime Minister Robert Abela described the development as an important milestone, stating that the Government had earned the trust of workers and was continuing to deliver results. He noted that the agreement represents another significant step forward for academics at Junior College, who are set to benefit from salary increases and improved working conditions.
Abela added that the collective agreement also reinforces lecturers’ commitment to providing students with the highest quality education, while thanking all those involved in the negotiations.
Minister for Education and Sport Byron Camilleri said that work on the agreement had begun from his first days in office and expressed satisfaction that discussions had progressed to the stage where the proposal can now be voted on by union members.
“As a result, the directives will also be suspended,” Camilleri stated, adding that the Government remains committed to improving the conditions of educators across the sector.
The Ministry emphasised that enhancing educators’ working conditions ultimately benefits students, with the agreement aimed at strengthening the educational experience at Junior College.
