JOSEPH MUSCAT QUESTIONS PN’S ENERGY PROPOSALS AND SOLAR PLAN

Former Prime Minister and Labour leader Joseph Muscat has taken to Facebook to criticise and challenge the Nationalist Party’s latest energy proposals, particularly its plan to reduce electricity bills through investment in solar energy.

In his post, Muscat questioned the feasibility of the PN’s proposal, which he claims would offer some households a €10 monthly reduction. He raised concerns about the removal of meter rental fees, arguing that such a move could undermine investment in infrastructure and potentially lead to increased power outages.

Focusing on the financing model, Muscat criticised the PN’s claim that €60 million in solar panel investment could generate €30 million annually. He mocked the projected returns, suggesting they were unrealistic and economically unsound.

He also took aim at the party’s proposal to install solar panels exclusively on government-owned rooftops, avoiding the use of ODZ land. According to Muscat, such an investment would require around 2 million square metres of roof space, which he compared to roughly 150 times the Floriana Fosos. He questioned whether such space actually exists, particularly when factoring in planning restrictions and heritage sites like Valletta.

Muscat concluded by calling on the Nationalist Party to publish a detailed list of these rooftops, stating that only then could the proposal be taken seriously and properly debated.
