John Agius Nicknamed “Tal-Għalqa” Identified As Alleged Shooter

What began as an alleged attempt to set construction workers on fire in St. Julian's ended in one of the most serious police operations in recent years.
The incident unfolded earlier today when a man allegedly lit a fire beneath a crane on which several construction workers were carrying out their duties, reportedly placing their lives in immediate danger.
When police officers arrived at the scene to speak with the individual and bring the situation under control, events escalated into an armed confrontation. According to police, shots were allegedly fired at officers, leaving Inspector Omar Sharif and Sergeant Johann Vella injured. One of the officers underwent emergency surgery after sustaining serious gunshot injuries to the neck and head.
A large-scale police operation was immediately launched and continued for several hours. By the end of the operation, two Maltese men had been arrested. The alleged shooter has been identified in local reports as John Agius, commonly known as John "Tal-Għalqa".
Police investigations remain ongoing as authorities work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the case.
