Eleven-year-old Jayana Chircop has been awarded the Pope John XXIII Award for Kindness 2026 during a ceremony held at San Anton Palace, where the recognition was presented by the President of Malta, Myriam Spiteri Debono.

The award, organised by the Peace Laboratory under the leadership of Father Dionysius Mintoff, honours children who consistently demonstrate kindness and compassion towards others in their everyday lives.

Jayana, a pupil at the Primary School in Rabat, Malta, which forms part of St Nicholas College, was nominated by her school's administration in recognition of the support she gives to her classmate, Cataleya Borg.

According to the nomination, Jayana willingly helps Cataleya without being prompted, offering friendship, encouragement and practical assistance throughout the school day.

Her continued support helps Cataleya feel welcomed, included and fully integrated within the class alongside her fellow pupils.

Jayana also makes a special effort to ensure that Cataleya can participate in school events and celebrations, allowing her to share in activities and experiences with the rest of her classmates.

Her actions were described as a powerful example of the importance of kindness, inclusion and supporting others through the challenges they may face.

Addressing those present, President Spiteri Debono said Jayana's actions serve as an example not only for children but also for adults, describing such acts of kindness as essential building blocks for peace between individuals and nations.

The President said the award demonstrates that even the smallest gestures can have a lasting impact.

She noted that a word of encouragement, a gesture of friendship, a moment of inclusion or a simple act of support can make a significant difference in another person's life.

She also paid tribute to Father Dionysius Mintoff for his 70 years of priesthood and his lifelong commitment to helping those in need through the values of inclusion, solidarity and generosity.

The ceremony was attended by Jayana and Cataleya, their parents and teachers, as well as Minister for Education and Sport Byron Camilleri and Minister for Social Policy and the Family Michael Falzon, who represented the Prime Minister.
