European Parliament President Roberta Metsola has received a significant endorsement for a historic third term at the helm of the European Parliament, with Italian Deputy Prime Minister and former European Parliament President Antonio Tajani publicly backing her to continue in office.

Speaking at the Rimini Meeting ahead of President Metsola’s address, Tajani praised her leadership, saying that if he were still an MEP, he would vote for her again.

“If I were still an MEP, I would vote for her again as President, so that she could continue her extraordinary work,” Tajani said.

Tajani, who served as President of the European Parliament between 2017 and 2019, said Metsola “has done an extraordinary job and will continue to do so,” adding that she commands support across political forces because of her “balanced approach.”

President Metsola is currently serving her second term as President of the European Parliament which comes to an end in January. A further mandate would be unprecedented, making her the first President in the institution’s history to serve three consecutive terms.

Addressing the Rimini Meeting, President Metsola spoke about the challenges facing Europe and the need to confront them with courage. She also addressed the need for a pragmatic approach to Europe’s green transition that protects businesses and competitiveness.

“That is what we are doing, and what we will continue to do in the coming weeks,” President Metsola said, pointing to the Parliament’s work on packaging legislation as an example of this approach.

President Metsola also confirmed that migration would feature, as Europe continues to work towards solutions that are effective, sustainable and capable of responding to citizens’ concerns.
