Each year on the 14th of March, scientists and enthusiasts mark 'World Cockroach Day,' an initiative aimed at replacing fear with understanding while highlighting the ecological importance of one of Earth’s oldest insect groups.

Cockroaches are often viewed with disgust, but naturalist and pest-management consultant Arnold Sciberras is working to change that perception.

Sciberras has also promoted 'World American Cockroach Day' and supports 'World Pest Day,' linking education with responsible, science-based pest control.

“Such days are not about glorifying pests,” he says, “but about understanding their biology and their role in nature.”

Cockroaches have existed for more than 300 million years, recycling nutrients and supporting food chains.

The American cockroach has also become an important model organism in research on movement and resilience. 1

4th March also honours pioneering scientist Lewis T. Roth, whose work reshaped scientific attitudes toward the insects.

Sciberras notes that only a handful of the more than 5,000 cockroach species are true pests.

Initiatives like 'Be Nice to Bugs Day' encourage people to learn about insects and respect the vital role they play in ecosystems.
