“It’s Not A Politician’s Job To Decide Who’s Guilty”, Says Justice Minister

In a video statement, Minister for Justice Clifton Grima said that it is not a politician’s job to decide who is guilty or innocent, but justice means letting the courts do their jobs.

Referring to the recent court verdict in regards to Yorgen Fenech being found not guilty in the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia, Minister Grima said that there have been many statements questioning the legitimacy and efficiency of the jury system.

Making reference to statements made by the Opposition, Grima asked why such doubts were not cast before the verdict was issued.

One may agree or disagree with the verdict, he said, but one cannot simply minimise the importance of the work that went on to reach a verdict simply because one disagrees with it.

The legal process was given all the required resources so that it can take place, he continued, with other reforms helping to ensure the process is streamlined and improved.

In reference to investigations regarding some of the jurors, the Minister said that these need to be taken seriously. But investigations are not verdicts, he added, and we must not jump to conclusions until the facts are established.

What happened needs to be established by the respective institutions. A verdict not agreeing with one’s conclusions does not mean the system does not work, he said, urging instead for continuous change to improve the system.
