Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could be facing the end of his time in office after President Isaac Herzog selected opposition leader Gadi Eisenkot to form the country's next government.

The decision follows elections held on October 27, which saw Netanyahu's coalition lose its parliamentary majority, securing 53 seats out of 120, while Eisenkot's opposition bloc won 48 seats.

Since neither party won a parliamentary majority, the decision went to President Herzog, who decided that Eisenkot would have the first chance to form a coalition government with the other parties running.

He now has 28 days to secure that coalition before the opportunity is passed back to Netanyahu’s bloc.
