Is Franco Debono Making A Return With The Nationalist Party?

Yesterday evening, former PN MP Franco Debono met with current Nationalist Party leader Alex Borg, sharing a photo of the two together on social media.

This has re-ignited speculation about Debono’s return to the party. A lawyer by profession, the former PN MP famously toppled Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi’s government back in 2012 by voting with Labour Party in the Budget vote.

Debono was also highly favoured in the recent speculation of future PN Leader after Bernard Grech’s resignation. Debono eventually did not contest the leadership election, seeing Borg winning over Adrian Delia.

Leadership was not the only position Debono has dabbled with, telling followers that he would be seeking a more active role within the party, but it is unclear what this would entail.

This would however go along well with Alex Borg’s reiteration that the PN should open its doors and welcome both new people and old guard back. He even invited Debono to the PN Żejtun Każin reopening, where he was very much welcomed.

And in January of two years ago, Borg had already expressed his support for Debono, saying the former MP has ‘much to offer.’
