The Irrestawra Darek scheme has been reopened for the Eastern Region with an allocation of €6.5 million, alongside an additional €1 million earmarked for Grade 1 and Grade 2 scheduled properties located outside Urban Conservation Areas.

The initiative forms part of the broader programme ‘Irrestawra Darek u l-Villaġġ’, aimed at supporting the restoration and conservation of Malta’s built heritage.

Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Employment Jonathan Attard announced that funding in the past six months has already reached €32 million, almost matching the €33 million allocated over the previous 30 years combined.

He described this as a significant acceleration in investment, reflecting renewed government focus on heritage preservation.

The Minister said the scheme supports property owners, businesses and non-governmental organisations in restoring historic buildings while improving the quality of life in local communities.

He stressed that the initiative is not only financial assistance but also a long-term investment in Malta’s architectural identity and cultural heritage.

Mr Attard added that strong demand for the scheme is evident, with more than 1,300 applications currently being processed.

He also linked the programme to Malta Vision 2050, highlighting its role in balancing economic growth, environmental protection and cultural preservation.

Planning Authority Executive Chairperson Johann Buttigieg said the scheme helps restore façades, encourages revitalisation of village centres and supports tourism by preserving traditional architecture.

Applications are open until 25 June, or earlier if funds are exhausted. The scheme covers several localities including Birkirkara, Sliema, St Julian’s, Msida, Ta’ Xbiex, Lija, Għargħur and Pietà.
