Dozens of students are expected to benefit from the initiative, with each session accommodating around 25 learners. The first group using the facility will progress through their studies and are expected to eventually perform with their instruments in the coming years.

Minister Farrugia explained that the project, titled “Indoqqu Flimkien: A Space for a Musical Ensemble at the Heart of the Community”, was funded through the Voluntary Organisations Project Scheme managed by the Malta Council for the Voluntary Sector.

She said the initiative reflects the Government’s ongoing commitment to strengthening the voluntary sector, which remains central to community development and social wellbeing.

The Minister also praised the work of the musical society and other organisations that bring together young people and children through activities including music, band work, pyrotechnics and wider community events that foster participation and cultural engagement.

She added that this year is dedicated to the voluntary sector and confirmed that Government will continue investing in voluntary organisations that improve quality of life for families and individuals, including persons with disabilities and those contributing to their communities.

MCVS Chief Executive Mauro Pace Parascandalo noted that the San Filep Band has previously benefitted from council funding, highlighting its consistent and effective use of support to strengthen both its musical and social role in the community.

Band President Dr Philip Sciortino described the new space as an accessible and valuable facility in the heart of Ħaż-Żebbuġ that will enhance music education for children in a shared environment.

The refurbishment included plastering and painting works, acoustic treatment to reduce distractions, and the installation of a display cabinet for instruments and learning materials. Attention was also given to lighting, colour scheme and spatial layout to encourage creativity and engagement with music.

This initiative is led by the Malta Council for the Voluntary Sector within the Ministry for Inclusion and Voluntary Organisations. More information is available at maltacvs.org.
