Investment In ‘MINDS’ Project To Place Malta At Parkinson’s Research Forefront

Parliamentary Secretary for Youth, Research, and Innovation Keith Azzopardi Tanti has launched the “MINDS” project, a biomedical research initiative at the University of Malta aimed at advancing understanding and care for Parkinson’s disease in Malta.
Backed by an investment of €150,000, the MINDS project represents an important step towards positioning Malta alongside leading European centres of medical excellence. Led by Neville Vassallo, the research seeks to deepen scientific knowledge of the condition while laying the groundwork for the development of new treatments driven by local expertise. It also complements existing government support, including free medication and advanced interventions such as Deep Brain Stimulation.
Speaking at the launch, Azzopardi Tanti described the initiative as a strong response to a condition affecting around 3,000 people in Malta. He emphasised that Life Sciences and Health are central to the country’s long term vision, particularly within the framework of Malta Vision 2050. He noted that the project will help foster innovation while supporting the development of young Maltese researchers, equipping them to contribute to future medical breakthroughs.
Adrian Casha, deputy chairman of Step Up for Parkinson’s, shared his personal experience of living with the condition. He highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by patients, including physical limitations and social stigma, while expressing optimism about the role of research and technology in improving quality of life. He also welcomed the investment, noting that it enables continued dedication from the research team.
Professor Vassallo underscored the importance of studying Parkinson’s at a molecular level, describing such research as essential for developing more effective and personalised treatments.
Launched ahead of World Parkinson’s Day on 11 April, the MINDS project reflects Malta’s ongoing commitment to innovation, research, and patient centred care, while strengthening its position in the global scientific community.
