Minister for Gozo and Planning, Clint Camilleri, has announced that the Ministry is undertaking intensive work and a significant investment in the Cittadella, one of Malta’s most important historical and cultural sites, which welcomes thousands of visitors every day. The aim of this investment is to ensure that this unique site is protected and preserved through advanced monitoring and continuous scientific research.

The Ministry is currently conducting a geological and geotechnical study of the Cittadella’s fortifications. This study seeks to investigate the long-term nature of the soil in sensitive areas and to complement data already collected through modern monitoring systems.

Minister Camilleri stated, “Geotechnical studies at the Cittadella began after some minor cracks were observed. We are undertaking this work to first and foremost install sensors and boreholes, ensuring all necessary equipment is in place and that data and monitoring can be obtained for the coming years. We are planning for a five-year period to understand subterranean movements beneath the city.” He explained that having this data and analysis will allow the identification of any additional interventions that may be required.

To achieve this, a specialised team of experts has been established to implement a strategy of preliminary investigations, prepare detailed site plans, and identify new areas of interest beyond those previously known. Precise locations have been determined for around 25 boreholes, ranging from 10 to 50 metres deep across the fortress. Several boreholes have already been drilled in the ditch area, along Triq Bieb l-Imdina, and on the Bastion of St Michael.

Over the next year, the Ministry plans to introduce an automated monitoring system specifically designed to meet the Cittadella’s unique requirements. This system will incorporate advanced technologies such as remote access, online portals, sophisticated data recovery systems, and careful selection of sensors.

This modern monitoring will allow precise differentiation between natural movements caused by temperature variations and deformations at the foundation level, ensuring that any issue is identified and addressed efficiently and promptly.
