Investing In Education Means Investing In Malta’s Future, Says Alex Borg

Partit Nazzjonalista Leader Alex Borg said education must remain a national priority, arguing that failure to invest in the sector means failing to invest in Malta’s future.

Speaking during a discussion on education held at the start of the school year in Għajnsielem, Borg said education should not be treated as a partisan issue and requires collective efforts to ensure students receive the skills needed to contribute to society and the economy.

Borg said investment in education also shapes Malta’s economic direction, referring to aviation training as an example of how targeted investment can attract opportunities in specific sectors. He said a similar approach should be taken to develop the economic future Malta wants.

The PN Leader referred to visits he made to schools in Ta’ Kerċem, Gozo, including BELS English language school and Santa Tereża Primary School, where educators highlighted the importance of being involved in shaping education policies. Borg said educators and students should have access to modern and well-equipped learning environments.

Discussing the PISA report, Borg said its findings should encourage a serious review of Malta’s education system, particularly regarding the development of critical thinking skills. He said the results should be analysed together with educators and students to determine the way forward.

Shadow Minister for Education and Citizenship Jerome Caruana Cilia also addressed the report, saying Malta must take seriously the challenges highlighted by international education research. He called for a national conference on education to help establish a clearer long-term direction.

During the discussion, educator Christine Scerri and MCAST lecturer Anna Maria Gatt also spoke about inclusion, the role of families, keeping education relevant, and the benefits of physical education for students.
