Inspector Elliot Magro Appointed Commissioner For Animal Welfare

Inspector Elliot Magro has been appointed Commissioner for Animal Welfare. The Commissioner's role is to promote and safeguard animal welfare, while protecting the rights and wellbeing of animals across Malta and Gozo. His appointment will take effect on 20 July 2026.
Inspector Magro has served in the Malta Police Force for more than 21 years, including the past 11 years as a Police Inspector. Throughout his career, he has led investigations, prosecuted hundreds of cases before the Courts and held a number of leadership positions.
In recent years, he has headed the Environment Protection Unit, where he oversaw the enforcement of environmental legislation and investigations into cases of animal cruelty and animal welfare offences.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Criminology, a Diploma in Policing, several international certifications in environmental crime enforcement and is currently reading for a Master's degree in Criminology at the University of Malta.
His commitment to animal welfare was recognised in 2022 during the Animal Honours Awards, organised to mark World Animal Day, when he received the Commissioner for Animal Welfare's Special Award in recognition of his dedication to enforcing legislation relating to animal cruelty and the mistreatment of animals.
Parliamentary Secretary Alicia Bugeja Said thanked Dr Fleur Abela for her service and dedication as Commissioner for Animal Welfare, recognising her commitment to promoting animal welfare throughout her term of office.
She also wished Inspector Elliot Magro every success in his new role and expressed her confidence that he will continue to strengthen efforts to protect and promote animal welfare in Malta and Gozo.
