INFORMA has launched its first book, titled IL-KARIKATURA TAL-MUMENT, offering a satirical lens on contemporary political events in Malta.

The publication features 24 cartoons that chronicle the political journey leading up to the 2024 European Parliament and Local Council elections.

The book is authored by INFORMA Director James Aaron Ellul, with illustrations by cartoonist and artist Mark Schembri. This release represents a first of its kind, marking the introduction of a new strand within the functions fulfilled by INFORMA as a research and studies centre.

Malta experienced numerous political developments during the period covered, many of which left a lasting mark on the country’s political landscape and affected the quality of life of Maltese and Gozitan citizens.

The book describes itself as a space “where absurdity becomes poetry, where criticism turns into colour,” offering readers a world that is simultaneously familiar and alien, with seriousness fractured by small details.

Each cartoon is accompanied by a description that explains the context behind it, as well as the thought process and reflection that inspired it, whether from events already experienced or still unfolding.

Some scandals have faded from memory, while others have grown beyond the original depiction in il-mument newspaper.

The book also explores the imagery used in each cartoon, explaining how and why it was created. Metaphors, sayings, and fictional characters bring the cartoons to life, including the popular San Klaċċubrejk, the patron saint of those stuck in traffic.

Through these characters, the cartoons convey messages that are accessible, humorous, and thought-provoking.

Copies of the book are available at the Nationalist Party’s Headquarters or by reserving one by calling 2596 5262.
