The Department of Information has announced the official reopening of Independence Garden in Ħaż-Żebbuġ, a previously neglected green space that has been transformed into a family-friendly area designed for children and visitors of all ages.

The project, led by the Department of Public Works, involved the planting of 50 indigenous trees and 550 year-round greenery plants. A new irrigation system has been installed to ensure the garden receives water as needed, and visitors can enjoy a newly integrated fountain as part of the design.

DOI wrote, “The holistic regeneration included creating a reservoir to collect rainwater from surrounding streets, which will be used to irrigate the garden. During the project’s planning phase, a location was identified for the installation of two tanks: a 10,000-litre tank for irrigation and a 3,000-litre tank to supply the fountain. Rainwater will be automatically pumped to ensure sustainable and efficient usage.”

They added, “In line with sustainability efforts, photovoltaic panels were installed to provide sufficient energy to power the garden, along with infrastructure for electric vehicles. A security system has also been added to enhance visitor safety.”
