A new Malta Police fleet was inaugurated in Kalkara, marking a significant investment aimed at strengthening operational capacity and improving public safety. The launch was led by Ministers Byron Camilleri and Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi, alongside Police Commissioner Angelo Gafà.
The investment, exceeding €2 million, includes 36 vehicles that effectively double the fleet available to the Rapid Intervention Unit (RIU) and the Roads Policing Unit (RPU).
Of these, 30 Alfa Stelvio Sprint vehicles have been assigned to the RIU to enhance mobility, surveillance, and rapid response in public spaces. Equipped with advanced technology, the vehicles are intended to improve the force’s ability to address serious criminal threats.
This forms part of the project “Enhancing the protection of public spaces through the procurement of specialised vehicles,” with a total value of €1.82 million. Sixteen of the RIU vehicles were co-funded by the European Union under the Internal Security Fund Programme 2021–2027.
Meanwhile, the RPU has been reinforced with four Skoda Octavia and two Ford Custom vehicles, backed by an additional €300,000 investment.
These will support officers in handling traffic incidents and improving on-site efficiency.
Officials said the initiative aligns with the “Malta Prepared” strategy, focusing on modernisation, prevention, and visibility.
Commissioner Gafà noted that results are already evident, with RIU officers conducting over 612,000 km of patrols and more than 3,400 road checks last year, alongside a decline in serious traffic accidents.
