The Ministry for Culture, Lands and Local Government, through the Valletta Cultural Agency (VCA), has launched an extensive regeneration and rehabilitation project for the City Gate complex in Valletta with an investment of €5 million.

The project, being carried out in collaboration with the Lands Authority, the Restoration and Preservation Directorate, and Public Works, aims to transform the area into a modern, safer and community-focused space.

Minister for Culture, Lands and Local Government Owen Bonnici said that after years of neglect, the complex had lost much of its aesthetic and social value. He explained that the project will breathe new life into the entrance of the capital while continuing to strengthen Valletta’s wider regeneration.

Among the key measures planned is the modernisation of the existing shops and food establishments, while current occupants will retain their leases.

The project will also include a multifunctional space on the first floor designed for cultural, creative and social activities, alongside a sensory and wellness area featuring calming elements and interactive installations. Although primarily aimed at young people, the space will be open to everyone.

A dedicated area for temporary art exhibitions will also be created, providing emerging and established artists with a platform to showcase their work.

Another major aspect of the project is the relocation of the Valletta Police Station from St George’s Square to the upper part of Valletta.

The complex will be fully accessible through the installation of lifts and escalators, with the entire project expected to be completed within two years.
