"In first 100 Days, I'll Reduce VAT On Food Establishments From 18% to 7%," Says Alex Borg

During a political activity in Isla as part of the Qrib Tagħkom series, Opposition leader Alex Borg outlined economic measures he would implement if elected to form the next government.
Borg said that within the first 100 days of a Nationalist Government, the VAT rate for food establishments would be reduced from 18% to 7%.
He described this as part of a wider set of initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life for Maltese, alongside the removal of tax on the Cost of Living Adjustment and exemption from tax on the first €10,000 earned from part-time and overtime work.
Borg also addressed what he described as unmet promises to pensioners. He criticised the Labour Government for allegedly failing to exempt pensioners from tax on all sources of income, stating that under a Nationalist Government, pensioners would see those promises delivered in full.
He called for cooperation and transparency, emphasising that the national interest should take priority.
At a separate event, Prime Minister Robert Abela said that despite ongoing international tensions and economic challenges, the Maltese Government will continue to provide stability and reassurance to citizens.
Speaking at a political event in Raħal Ġdid, Abela highlighted efforts to keep energy prices stable through government subsidies, noting that Malta avoided the sharp increases seen elsewhere in Europe.
He emphasised that the government would maintain these subsidies to support families and businesses, and pointed to recent measures including €300 million in tax cuts, a €500 grant for parents to purchase digital learning tools, and additional support through the Cost of Living Adjustment.
Abela also addressed national security concerns regarding a gas tanker outside Maltese territorial waters, stressing that authorities are prepared for any situation, and announced ongoing investments in public safety personnel and infrastructure.
