The Imsida Creek flyover has been officially inaugurated, marking a key milestone in a major infrastructure project aimed at modernising one of Malta’s most strategic transport corridors.

Prime Minister Robert Abela described the development as a significant step towards the completion of the wider Imsida Creek project, which represents a €35 million investment fully financed through public funds.

Speaking during the inauguration, Abela said the project reflects Malta’s economic strength and ability to deliver large scale infrastructure. He referred to recent assessments by the International Monetary Fund, which confirmed that Malta has a resilient and dynamic economy.

The Prime Minister also highlighted the local contribution to the project, noting that the 270 tonnes of steel used in the flyover were designed and manufactured in Malta. He said this demonstrated the skills, innovation and capacity of Maltese industry, while also providing a boost to the local economy.

Abela noted that the flyover was completed in under a year, with works carefully planned to minimise disruption.

Much of the construction was carried out during the night and at weekends. He added that future phases of the project will deliver a new public square, additional open spaces for families, safer routes for pedestrians and cyclists, and a modern utilities system designed to address flooding in the area.

He said the project shows what can be achieved through unity and determination.

Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works Chris Bonett explained that the project was implemented in phases to reduce inconvenience for residents and road users. He stressed the importance of clear communication with the public, with traffic changes announced well in advance.

Minister Bonett said that following the recent opening of the bridge linking Imsida and Pietà, vehicles will start using the flyover immediately.

He added that upcoming works, including a new 300 metre channel, will further reduce flooding while creating new open spaces that reconnect the Imsida community.
