Imperium Europa’s Eman Cross To Contest General Election 2026

After years on the sidelines, Imperium Europa has announced its return to Malta’s general election scene, with the vote set for 30th May.
The party had previously shifted its focus to European Parliament ambitions, but is now re-entering local politics under newly appointed leader Eman Cross.
Cross, who took over leadership in March 2026 from Terrence Portelli, is expected to contest the 1st and 9th districts.
However, it remains unclear whether additional candidates will be fielded. Despite the announcement, the party has yet to outline any concrete proposals, relying instead on its slogan: “Salva l-pajjiżek, tħallihomx jidħku bik.”
On the first day of the general election, the party also claimed that their Instagram account had been suspended, saying that this is the only way their ‘enemies can try to stop’ them.
The leadership change itself raises eyebrows. Cross had been permanently expelled from the party in 2021, with founder Norman Lowell citing “bad character and aggressive behaviour.” His return, and swift elevation to leader, is a sharp and unexplained reversal.
Imperium Europa, widely recognised as Malta’s far-right political party, has repeatedly found itself embroiled in controversy, including fines and censorship reportedly over hate speech and racism. Its founder, Lowell, remains involved and carries a track record of legal issues related to racist speech.
