Image From 1847 Regarded As Earliest Surviving Street Photo Taken In Malta

A photo shared to local Facebook group ‘Nostalgia Malta’ shows Strada Britannica in Valletta, captured by James Dunlop around 1847.

The 19th century snapshot is wildly regarded as one of the earliest surviving street photographs taken in Malta.

The image was shared by Michelle Forbes, who explained that it was taken by Dunlop “using the calotype process.”

This is an early photographic process that used light-sensitive paper to create a negative image, allowing photographers to produce multiple positive prints from a single photograph for the first time.
