Illegal Bonfire Burns Shrubs In Protected Area

The Malta Ranger Unit reported an illegal bonfire which was done at Dingli chapel, severely damaging a Natura2000 site in the process.

The Unit alleged that the “Dingli Cliffs feast organiser at St. Mary Magdalene Chapel kindled the bonfire directly on the protected garigue, in a strictly protected Natura2000.”

The fire reportedly broke a number of legal regulation, such as the “littering law” and “woodland regulation.”

Additionally, starting a fire during a heatwave can be incredibly dangerous as it can easily trigger a fast spreading wild fire.

“We urge the public to show the Civil Protection Malta Officers some respect by not being reckless and kindle fires like this one,” stated the Malta Ranger Unit.

“Respect our Nature, leave no trace,” they concluded.
