The Institute of Maltese Journalists (IGM) has marked eight years since the assassination of investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, renewing its call for truth, justice, and stronger protections for journalists in Malta.

“Daphne was not just a journalist; she was a beacon of hope for many,” the IGM said. “Her courage to speak out against injustice resonated far beyond the shores of Malta, reminding us that the pursuit of truth is not merely a profession, but a moral obligation.”

The institute emphasised that journalism is the cornerstone of a healthy democracy, serving as the mechanism through which citizens are informed, empowered, and able to hold those in power accountable. It warned that when journalism is threatened, “the very fabric of democratic society begins to unravel.”

The IGM described Daphne’s assassination as “an assault on the principles of freedom of expression and the rights of all journalists,” adding that it sent a chilling message to those who dare to expose the truth.

Journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia was assassinated eight years ago today, on the 16th of October 2017.

“The fight for justice for Daphne is not only about accountability for her murder,” the institute stated. “It is about ensuring that her legacy lives on in the continued pursuit of truth.”

The IGM called on the public to stand with journalists, defend access to information, and recognise journalism as a public good that underpins democracy.
