Ian Borg Calls For Practical Pandemic Preparedness At UN

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Health Ian Borg called for practical and flexible preparations for future pandemics while addressing a United Nations High-Level Meeting on Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness and Response in New York.

The meeting, held during the High-Level Week of the United Nations General Assembly, brought together representatives from the World Health Organization, the European Commissioner for Health, ministers and other international healthcare leaders.

In his address, Borg expressed Malta's support for the Political Declaration adopted at the meeting, describing it as an important step towards stronger and fairer pandemic prevention and response. He also welcomed progress made through the WHO Pandemic Agreement and amendments to the International Health Regulations.

Borg said that small states such as Malta face unique challenges, including limited capacity, reliance on international supply chains and the significant impact health emergencies can have on smaller countries. He stressed that international cooperation remains essential while Malta continues strengthening its own healthcare system.

He also called for greater investment in primary healthcare, public health surveillance, laboratories and the health workforce, while ensuring fair access to vaccines, medicines and other medical resources during future emergencies. Borg added that preparedness plans should also safeguard education, routine vaccinations, essential healthcare services and mental health support, particularly for children, older people and vulnerable groups.

During his visit to the United States, Borg also met leaders from several leading healthcare institutions, including Mayo Clinic, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Montefiore Einstein and Boston Children's Hospital, where discussions focused on research, innovation, cancer care, professional training and opportunities for future collaboration.
