‘I Disagree With Raise Despite It Also Affecting Me’, Says Alex Borg

In a video statement, Nationalist Party Leader Alex Borg said that he disagrees with the ‘secretive’ €1,700 increase given to politicians who are in the executive.
He said that the raise will be impacting members of parliament and parliamentary secretaries as well as himself as leader of the Opposition.
‘I was not consulted at any point’, said Borg. He went on to say that when asked after the parliamentary sitting that took place yesterday, he was clear that he disagrees with it.
‘Even though it applies to me too, I absolutely disagree with it. Especially when considering that people are being given only €4.66 per week, which will also be taxed’, he continued.
Borg went on urge the Prime Minister to retract the raise.
The collective agreement, said Malta Public Service, was agreed upon with all unions. Under the same agreement, all government pay scales will continue to rise until 2030 as negotiated with all unions.
The largest increase will go to employees in Scales 5, 6, and 7, who will benefit from an additional €1,652 per year. This includes the €242 Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) for this year.
