How Mattia Found Hope After Everything Fell Apart

When 18-year-old Mattia lost his brother, everything changed. Life at home became heavier, more complicated.
“We ended up completely alone, without any carers,” says his mother, Marvy. “It was just me and Mattia, trying to manage everything on our own.”But two years ago, DAR Bjorn Żebbuġ opened its doors and gave them both the support they desperately needed.
A New Chapter for Mattia
With his black curly hair, Mattia stands out with confidence. Though he uses a wheelchair, he communicates clearly and connects instantly with those around him.
At DAR Bjorn, he found more than medical help – he found stability, purpose, and a sense of belonging. He also enjoys hours on his PlayStation, challenging himself and his friends.
Mattia’s bond with animals is strong, especially with his dog Benji, who visits him regularly and brings endless joy. But Mattia also has an unexpected soft spot for… snakes.
So when Maria Formosa heard about it, she organised a surprise: a special visit with real snakes. “He couldn’t stop smiling,” she said. “Those little moments mean everything.”
Be Part of the Change This 31 August
Mattia’s story is just one of many. On 31 August, the Dar Bjorn Telethon will raise funds to continue providing care, equipment, and dignity to people living with ALS and neurological conditions. Every euro counts. Every message matters. Every act of kindness helps build a stronger, more compassionate Malta.
