How Did July's Extreme Heat Affect Public Health, Asks Partit Momentum

Momentum has filed a Freedom of Information (FOI) request seeking official data on the impact of July's extreme heat and power outages on public health.

The request asks the Ministry for Health for the number of heat-related hospital admissions recorded during July 2026, together with anonymised locality data, as well as the daily number of deaths, sudden, unexpected or unattended deaths, and any records assessing deaths suspected to have been linked to extreme heat.

It also requests comparative mortality figures for July in 2023, 2024 and 2025.

Momentum stressed that it is not seeking any personal identifying information and that all data should be provided in an anonymised format.

The request follows growing public concern over possible deaths during recent power outages and the effects of prolonged high temperatures.

Momentum executive member Katya Compagno said the request aims to establish the impact of the outages and heatwave on public health while promoting transparency and informed public discussion.
