Minister of Home Affairs and Security Glenn Bedingfield has called for action to address mounting pressure on Malta’s prison system, arguing that foreign prisoners who have served their sentences, or are nearing the end of their terms should be deported.

In a statement shared on Facebook, Bedingfield highlighted the financial burden associated with keeping prisoners behind bars, pointing out that each inmate costs approximately €145 per day.

He stated that the issue goes beyond prison security and the administration of justice, describing it as a matter of responsibility towards taxpayers who ultimately foot the bill.

His comments draw attention to the challenges facing Malta’s correctional system at a time when public debate on Malta’s population problem is particularly tumultuous.
