Hold The Hoodies: Summer Might Be Over, But Malta Is Still Hot

Summer may officially be over, and rain may have finally returned to parts of Malta, but don’t put the shorts away just yet.

Despite the shift into autumn, temperatures across the Maltese Islands are still sitting firmly as if it were still summer, with highs around the upper 20 degrees Celsius, verging into the 30’s.

That means Malta is currently stuck in one of those very familiar September phases: rain in the morning, sunshine shortly after, and temperatures that still make you question whether autumn has actually started at all.

The cooler-looking skies can also be deceiving. Even when clouds roll in and showers hit parts of the island, the air can remain warm and humid, especially when winds are light.

And this is pretty normal for Malta.

The end of astronomical summer doesn’t mean temperatures suddenly drop overnight. The Mediterranean retains heat built up throughout the summer months, meaning Malta can continue experiencing warm conditions well into September, and sometimes October.

So yes, summer is officially over.

Yes, it’s raining.

And yes, you’ll probably still regret wearing a hoodie by lunchtime.
