HIV Diagnoses Among Maltese Doubled Over 30 Years, Says Dr

People with HIV in Malta have doubled over the years.
According to Consultant Dr Tonio Piscopo, speaking with TVM, increased awareness has encouraged more people to get tested, which in turn has led to a higher number of positive results being identified.
He explained to TVM that early testing remains essential, as timely treatment allows individuals to maintain good health and avoid complications.
Dr Piscopo outlined the range of testing options now available. These include self-testing kits, pharmacy testing services and over the counter tests.
He stresses that anyone who receives a positive result should consult a doctor, noting that HIV is no longer the life ending diagnosis it once was. Effective treatment exists and people living with HIV can enjoy long, healthy and fulfilling lives.
Over his three decades of experience, Dr Piscopo has seen the number of HIV cases in Malta rise steadily, with testing rates at clinics also doubling. Around 120 people make contact each year, including both Maltese nationals and foreign residents.
While HIV transmission through drug use is extremely rare in Malta, sexual transmission remains the primary cause for concern.
