Historic Victory Kitchen Sign At Risk of Deterioration Due To AC Water

Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna has raised concerns over the endangered state of conservation of the wartime ‘Victory Kitchen’ wall sign in Melita Street, Valletta.
The sign is the only example of its kind to survive, but it is currently awash with air conditioning water which continuously streams over its surface from the united located in the balcony above.
‘Urgent action is needed for the water to be imemdiately stopped or diverted and the paintwork to be examined by conservators to establish if it needs any emergency consolidation to avoid fading, flaking or other forms of disintegration.’
‘The Victory Kitchen was a nation wide civilian organisation set up by government which operated a large number of communal kitchens throughout Malta and Gozo in the Second World War.’
‘By pooling resources it was aimed at making food supplies stretch as far as possible at a time when the island was blockaded and cut off from the rest of the world. Throughout its existenceit had fed hundreds of thousands of mouths playing a crucial part in staving of starvation and surrender.’
