Historic Shelter In Żurrieq Reopens To The Public

A historic shelter located at No. 1, Triq il-Kbira, Żurrieq, has reopened to the public after the property, which was previously under the responsibility of the Lands Authority, was transferred through a five-year lease agreement to the Żurrieq Local Council.

The shelter covers an area of around 57 square metres and, through this transfer, the Local Council will be responsible for its upkeep, maintenance and conservation as a site of historical and cultural importance.

The shelter has the potential to serve as an educational and community space that preserves the country’s collective memory and recalls the experiences and sacrifices of those who lived through wartime.

Minister for Housing and Lands Owen Bonnici said the reopening of the site demonstrates how historical heritage can remain relevant for present and future generations.

“This project shows how, through collaboration between government entities and local councils, we can give new life to historical sites and transform them into spaces for knowledge, education and community benefit,” Minister Bonnici said.

Żurrieq Mayor Rita Grima said that, following the necessary cleaning works, the shelter can now once again be used by the community.

“We are pleased that this historic shelter has been given a new lease of life. Now that the necessary cleaning has been carried out, the people of Żurrieq will be able to visit and enjoy it, while we will also be able to organise activities there,” she said.
