An historic cross in Santa Venera has been restored following extensive conservation works carried out by the Department of Public Works, preserving a monument that has formed part of the locality’s cultural and historical identity for more than a century.

The restoration was officially inaugurated by Minister for Local Government and Public Works Alison Zerafa Civelli together with Santa Venera Mayor Gianluca Falzon during a ceremony celebrating the completion of the project and the importance of the cross to the local community.

Minister Zerafa Civelli said the project reflects the professional work carried out by the Department of Public Works in communities across Malta, highlighting the importance of protecting the country’s historical and cultural heritage.

She added that projects such as this demonstrate how collaboration between government entities and local councils helps preserve the identity of communities for current and future generations.

Mayor Falzon thanked the ministry and the Department of Public Works for their cooperation, explaining that the intervention was requested after the council noticed signs of deterioration on the monument. Following a detailed assessment, the necessary restoration works were identified and carried out.

The cross was originally located in Santa Venera’s old square. When construction of the new church began in 1969, it was temporarily placed on the roof of the church crypt before being relocated to its current position on one of the locality’s main roads, where it remains an important landmark.

Over the years, exposure to the elements caused significant deterioration, requiring restoration works to safeguard the monument. The project repaired accumulated damage while maintaining the cross’s historical and artistic character, ensuring it can continue to be appreciated by future generations.
