Heritage Malta, in collaboration with renowned fashion designers Charles & Ron, has launched a unique exhibition that brings together history, craftsmanship and contemporary fashion at the Grand Master's Palace in Valletta.

Titled Inspired by History: From Tapestries to Contemporary Fashion, the exhibition showcases six gowns from the designers' GIOIA collection, displayed along the corridor leading to the recently restored Tapestry Chamber.

Created for the Autumn/Winter 2021/22 season, the GIOIA collection draws inspiration from the magnificent tapestries commissioned by Grand Master Ramon Perellos.

Although the collection was completed during the COVID-19 pandemic, restrictions at the time prevented it from being presented publicly.

The restoration of both the tapestries and the Tapestry Chamber provided the ideal opportunity to finally unveil the collection through a collaboration with Heritage Malta, complemented by a fashion show held within the palace.

Running until the end of August, the exhibition highlights the intricate flora and fauna depicted in the historic tapestries while offering contemporary interpretations of three distinctive scenes.

One gown, inspired by The Striped Horse, has been generously donated by Charles & Ron to Heritage Malta and will become part of the national textile collection.

Featuring hand beading, intricate embroidery and a reimagined colour palette of rich pink tones, the design creates a striking dialogue between historic textile art and modern fashion.

During the inauguration, Heritage Malta Chief Executive Officer Noel Zammit thanked Charles & Ron for their second donation to the national collection, describing it as a strong vote of confidence.

He added that the exhibition perfectly reflects Heritage Malta's belief that the nation's heritage remains alive by connecting the past with the present through creativity and people.
