Here’s Everything You Need To Know About Malta’s New Transport Plan

Malta has launched a long-term plan called “Malta in Motion” to tackle traffic, improve transport, and make everyday travel easier.
The idea is simple. Instead of focusing only on roads, the government wants one connected system that includes buses, ferries, walking, cycling, parking, and a future metro-style network.
What’s actually changing? The plan is built around six main areas:
Better buses: more routes, more frequent services, faster journeys;
Ferry services: greater use of sea transport to ease road pressure;
Walking and cycling: safer streets and improved access;
Road improvements: smoother traffic flow and reduced congestion;
Parking system: smarter parking and expanded park and ride options;
Rapid Transit System (RTS): a high-capacity public transport system planned for the future.
The big idea:
Instead of fixing issues one at a time, everything will be planned and connected.
For example:
You could take a bus, connect to a ferry, then walk or cycle the final part;
Or park outside busy areas and continue using public transport.
What about the metro? A key part of the plan is the Rapid Transit System, which would:
Connect major locations such as Valletta, the airport, Mater Dei, and the north;
Be fast, frequent, and able to carry large numbers of passengers;
Be developed in phases over time.
This is a long-term project and will take years to complete.
Why is this happening?
Malta is growing quickly, and the current system is under strain. The plan aims to:
Reduce traffic and travel time;
Improve quality of life;
Make transport more reliable;
Support future growth.
When will changes happen?
Some improvements are already underway, while the full plan will roll out over the next 15 years in stages.
