Here Are Some Maltese Urban Legends You Might Not Know

Malta is actually home to many urban legends, ghost stories, and interesting historical theories…here are three you might not know!
Starting off with Homer, you might know his name because of Nolan’s upcoming film, or maybe you studied the Odyssey in school. But did you know Malta might be involved?
When Homer wrote The Odyssey, he might have included Gozo. Some theorise that the legendary Ogygia where Odysseus was shipwrecked and held captive is actually Gozo.
This is backed up by a number of historians, including Greek Callimachus. Odysseus was held captive in a cave which many suspect was Calypso’s Cave, overlooking Ramla Bay.
Moving on to a ghost story from quiet Mdina.
‘The Blue Lady of Mdina’ is a widespread tale of a young noble girl forced into marriage. While trying to escape her wedding, she fell to her death from the city walls. Some locals claim that a figure in blue can be seen haunting the Silent City’s streets at night.
Mellieħa is our final stop, bringing forth a creepy urban legend to make your skin crawl.
The Devil’s Farmhouse in Mellieħa is theorised to have been built by Satan himself. Many report hearing voices, unidentified noises, and seeing shadows when they pass by it. Some locals warn passers by to avoid the area after dark.
