Simple everyday actions such as blocking direct sunlight, keeping hot air out, keeping cool air in, staying hydrated and getting enough rest can help people remain comfortable and safe during periods of extreme heat.

These recommendations form part of the Climate Action Authority's 'Stay Cool' campaign, which encourages residents across Malta to adopt practical measures to cope with rising summer temperatures while using energy more efficiently.

Following a summer marked by extreme and record-breaking heat, with daytime temperatures frequently exceeding 37°C and 'feels like' temperatures often rising above 40°C, the campaign provides guidance on how people can stay cool while avoiding unnecessary energy consumption.

One of the main tips is to block the sun before indoor spaces become overheated. Residents are encouraged to close curtains, blinds or shutters during the hottest hours of the day, particularly on windows exposed to direct sunlight, as this can help reduce the amount of heat entering homes and workplaces.

The campaign also advises people to keep hot air out by keeping doors and windows closed during the hottest parts of the day, especially when outdoor temperatures are higher than indoor temperatures. Ventilating rooms during cooler periods, such as early mornings and evenings, can help improve airflow without increasing indoor heat.

To keep cool air in, residents are encouraged to use air conditioning efficiently by setting temperatures to around 25°C, ensuring doors and windows are closed while cooling systems are operating, and avoiding unnecessary use of appliances that generate additional heat indoors.

Other important recommendations include staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day, even before feeling thirsty, and choosing lighter meals that require less cooking and help reduce heat inside the home.

The campaign also reminds people of the importance of resting well, particularly during the hottest hours, by avoiding strenuous activity when temperatures peak and allowing the body time to recover.

The campaign also highlights the need to look out for others during extreme heat. People are encouraged to check on elderly relatives, friends and neighbours, seek shade when outdoors and never leave children, vulnerable people or pets inside parked vehicles.

Through these simple and practical steps, the Climate Action Authority is reminding the public that staying cool and safe does not require excessive energy use. Small daily choices can help protect health, improve comfort and support more responsible energy consumption throughout the summer.
