Malta has seen four fires in the last 48 hours, as temperatures across the island reach news highs for this summer.

These soaring temperatures increasing the risk of fires, people are being urged to take extra precautions at home and outdoors to help prevent avoidable incidents during the heatwave. Here are some things you can do.

It’s important to keep flammable materials away from direct sunlight and heat sources, while avoiding overloading electrical sockets, especially when fans and air conditioning units are running for long periods.

Lithium-ion batteries used in e-scooters, e-bikes and power banks should only be charged with approved chargers and never left unattended.

Outdoors, cigarettes should always be fully extinguished, and glass bottles should never be discarded in fields or dry vegetation, where they can contribute to fires in extreme conditions.

Barbecues should be used only in designated areas and never left unattended.

Drivers should also avoid parking vehicles on dry grass, as hot exhaust systems can ignite vegetation.

Taking a few simple precautions can significantly reduce the risk of fires, helping to protect lives, property and the environment during periods of extreme heat.
