Health Authorities Urge Public To Take Precautions Due To Extreme Heat
Local

The Health Authorities have urged the public to take precautions as high temperatures continue to affect the Maltese Islands, warning that prolonged exposure to heat can have serious health consequences.

Older persons, infants and young children, pregnant women, people with chronic medical conditions, and those working or exercising outdoors are considered particularly vulnerable during periods of excessive heat.

The authorities said the health risks linked to extreme temperatures are well recognised and can largely be prevented through appropriate measures.

Members of the public are advised to drink water regularly throughout the day, avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest hours, and remain in cool, shaded or air-conditioned areas whenever possible.

People are also encouraged to wear light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing, apply sunscreen when outdoors, keep homes ventilated, and avoid leaving children, elderly persons or pets unattended in vehicles.

The public is also being encouraged to check regularly on vulnerable relatives, neighbours and others who may require assistance during hot weather.

The Health Authorities said people should remain alert for symptoms of heat-related illness, including dizziness, excessive sweating, headaches, nausea, weakness, confusion and fainting.

Anyone experiencing signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke should seek immediate medical attention, as heat stroke is considered a medical emergency.

The authorities said they continue to monitor the situation and remain prepared to implement measures under Malta’s Heat Health Action Plan to safeguard public health. The public is encouraged to follow official updates and advisories issued by the competent authorities.
