Ħal Far Drag Track Surface To Be Completed By End Of Year, Full Project Ready In 2026

Prime Minister Robert Abela announced on Sunday morning that the surface of the Ħal Far quarter-mile drag racing track will be completed by the end of this year, marking the first phase of a major upgrade to Malta’s motorsport facilities. Speaking during a national event, Abela said that once the resurfacing is finished, work will begin next year on building the new control tower, spectator stands, and supporting amenities, with the entire project expected to be completed by the end of next year.
The Ħal Far drag strip, managed by the Malta Drag Racing Association, has long been a central hub for local motorsport enthusiasts. However, the track and its facilities have been in need of significant investment and modernisation. Over the past few years, the Government has outlined plans to transform the wider Ħal Far area into a multi-purpose motorsport hub, combining drag racing, circuit racing, and karting facilities within one upgraded complex.
In 2023, the Government expanded the area allocated to the racetrack project, adding more land to improve safety and allow for better design. Plans include rebuilding the existing stands, constructing administrative offices and club spaces, and introducing retail areas and a modern control tower. According to feasibility studies, the total cost of the full motorsport complex could reach around €78 million, much of which will depend on public funding.
While the project has faced challenges, including high costs, environmental concerns, and the relocation of two nearby operators, it remains one of the most anticipated developments for Malta’s motorsport community. Advocates believe the upgraded facility will provide safer, more professional conditions for local racers and could also help attract sport tourism to the island.
Prime Minister Abela said the investment shows the Government’s continued commitment to supporting local pastimes and sports, ensuring that Malta’s traditions and hobbies, including motorsport, are given the attention and protection they deserve.
