A new group virtual reality experience has been introduced at the Ħamrun Active Ageing Centre as part of efforts by Active Ageing and Community Care (AACC) to modernise services and enhance the wellbeing of older adults living in the community.

The initiative allows participants to use virtual reality technology in group settings, giving them the opportunity to enjoy immersive experiences such as virtual travel, cultural visits and recreational activities.

The programme is also designed to encourage conversation, social interaction and shared experiences among participants, while providing opportunities to continue learning and explore new environments.

The launch was attended by Parliamentary Secretary for Active Ageing Deo Debattista and representatives from AACC, with older adults at the centre becoming the first to try the new technology.

The experience will be gradually introduced at other Active Ageing Centres over the coming weeks, allowing more participants to take part. The technology will also be used for reminiscence activities, helping older adults recall memories, stimulate conversation and strengthen communication through experiences linked to the past.

Parliamentary Secretary Deo Debattista said the initiative demonstrates how technology can improve people's lives while creating more opportunities for older adults to remain active, connected and engaged in their communities.

AACC Chief Executive Officer Steve Agius said research carried out among participants produced encouraging results. Although two-thirds had never used virtual reality before, 91% reported high satisfaction levels, 93% experienced positive emotions and 91% said they would like to use the technology again.

The initiative also supports the objectives of Malta Vision 2050 by promoting innovation, digital inclusion and healthier, more active ageing.
