The government has launched a review of Gozo’s Regional Development Strategy 2023–2033, three years after its publication, to assess progress and identify priorities for the island’s future.

Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri said the review would evaluate what has been achieved, what could be improved and where new approaches may be needed to reflect the needs and aspirations of the Gozitan community.

Camilleri said Gozo’s development should be measured not only through economic growth, but also through quality of life, better connectivity, quality employment, environmental protection and a more diversified and resilient economy.

The strategy sets out a long-term vision that balances economic progress with sustainability and quality of life, while aligning Gozo’s development with Malta Vision 2050.

Gozo Regional Development Authority CEO Juergen Attard said the review would assess how much of the strategy had been implemented and how economic, social, environmental and policy conditions had changed over the past three years. He added that the process would be evidence-based, identifying areas of progress as well as those requiring further work or adjustments.

Key priorities include improving infrastructure and connectivity, creating quality jobs, promoting sustainable tourism, supporting innovation and digitalisation, strengthening agriculture and the rural economy, and protecting Gozo’s environment and identity.

The review will also consider climate resilience, including cleaner energy, sustainable mobility, water resources and infrastructure better equipped to address climate change.

The Ministry for Gozo will work with the Gozo Regional Development Authority and other relevant entities to ensure the revised strategy includes clear, measurable objectives for the island’s development in the years ahead.
