Gozo Ministers Shoot Down Idea of High-Rise Tower In Gozo

In a series of Facebook posts, several Gozitan ministers have firmly rejected the idea of introducing high-rise towers to Malta’s sister island.

During an interview held just days ago, newly elected PN leader Alex Borg stopped short of ruling out the possibility of high-rise developments in Gozo. Instead, he stressed that such projects could only be considered if Malta were to adopt a comprehensive skyline policy.

Anton Refalo, Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries, and Animal Rights, reiterated that the Labour Party has consistently opposed the construction of towers in Gozo. As a Gozitan himself, he added that it is their duty to continue safeguarding the island from such developments. Similarly, Health Minister Jo Etienne echoed this stance, emphasising that Gozo should remain an island of villages rather than become a site for urbanisation.

Meanwhile, Clint Camilleri, Minister for Gozo and Planning, criticised Borg’s reluctance to outright dismiss the idea of high-rise buildings. He reaffirmed that Gozo must be protected for its unique character and cultural identity.

Alex Borg responded to this backlash yesterday during the PN Independence Mass Meeting. He emphasised that the country’s local plans must be revisited in order to achieve long-term future gain.

Borg clarified that he believes in the implementation of a skyline policy to protect our landscapes.

“We have a reality in our country,” he stated, “that we started building towers, however the government never implemented a skyline policy on a national basis.”

He denied that he is driven to build high-rise towers in Gozo, stating that he will continue to defend Malta’s sister island, as he has always done.

“Gozo has identity, it has character, and we will stand with the Gozitan population,” finished Borg.
