Government Working To Secure Direct Malta-New York Flights Again In 2027

Could Maltese travellers fly directly to New York again in 2027? Prime Minister Robert Abela has confirmed that negotiations are underway with Delta Air Lines to bring back direct flights between Malta and the Big Apple next year.
The announcement was made during Abela's reaction to Budget 2027 in Parliament, as he outlined plans to strengthen Malta's international flight connections.
Delta launched its first direct Malta-New York service on 7th June 2026, connecting Malta International Airport with New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK).
The historic route operated three times a week using Boeing 767-300 aircraft, allowing passengers to travel directly between Malta and the United States without stopping at another airport.
And the figures suggest strong demand!
According to Government figures, the route recorded an average seat occupancy rate of 84% up to 21st September 2026.
Back in September, during his visit to New York for the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Abela met Delta Air Lines Vice President Scott Jordan to discuss extending the route into 2027.
The Prime Minister highlighted the importance of strengthening Malta's international connections to attract more tourists and create new business opportunities.
However, Delta has not yet officially confirmed whether direct Malta-New York flights will return in 2027.
Meanwhile, during the same Budget reaction speech, Abela also announced that Qatar Airways will resume direct flights between Malta and Doha in March 2027, offering travellers connections to destinations including Australia, Japan, China and beyond.
