The Government has signed a three-year social agreement with Fondazzjoni Sebħ to strengthen aftercare services for young people leaving residential care and women and children leaving shelters following experiences of domestic violence.

The agreement will see almost €1 million invested over three years to ensure support continues after a person leaves residential care or a shelter, helping them move towards a safer, more stable and independent life.

The programme provides three forms of aftercare: support while preparing to leave residential care, semi-independent transitional accommodation, and support within the community once a person begins living independently. Services will include practical, emotional and psychosocial support, as well as assistance with accessing education, training, employment, healthcare and other community resources. For victims of domestic violence, support can also include assistance with legal procedures, financial stability, safe accommodation, safety planning and recovery from trauma.

Social Policy and Family Minister Michael Falzon said continued support and monitoring is important for young people leaving residential care after turning 18, as well as for victims of domestic violence rebuilding their lives independently.

Fondazzjoni Sebħ director Yvonne Mallia said the service was created to support young people and women during this transition, while adapting to their changing needs. The agreement brings together Government investment, FSWS and the voluntary sector to provide continued professional support during a significant period of transition.
