Government Transfers Imqabba Site To Local Council For New HQ

A site which is currently under the responsibility of the Lands Authority, has been transferred on a lease basis for a period of five years to the Local Council of Mqabba, with the aim of being developed and eventually serving as the new headquarters of the council.
The premises are located in Karmen Ciantar Street in Mqabba and cover an area of just over 84 square metres. Through this transfer, the Local Council of Mqabba will have a larger, more suitable and more accessible space from which to operate for the benefit of families and residents of the locality.
The Minister for Culture, Lands and Local Government, Owen Bonnici, said that this project confirms the Government’s confidence in local councils.
He noted that the Government remains committed to strengthening and supporting local councils so that they can carry out their work effectively for the benefit of residents.
He added that the allocation of this new space as council offices improves services, strengthens community presence and provides a more accessible environment for all, while helping to build stronger and more inclusive communities.
The Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government, Alison Zerafa Civelli, said that the Government is ensuring that each devolution agreement is sustainable and does not place an excessive burden on local councils.
She explained that this commitment will continue to be reinforced to improve localities and services delivered by both councils and central government.
She highlighted the Mqabba project as an example, noting that residents will be able to access government services in one central location.
The Mayor of the Local Council of Mqabba, Grace Marie Zerafa, said the Council had worked for several months to secure the land. She described the agreement as an important step that will benefit the community and support the Council’s work going forward.
